At the official ceremony marking the launch of PayPal services in the Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu urged Maldivian creators and entrepreneurs to penetrate the international market and capitalize on the opportunities now within reach. Highlighting that this milestone fulfills a key presidential pledge to resolve the financial transaction barriers previously faced by local creators, the President emphasized that the integration of PayPal is a pivotal component of his broader vision for a digital economy. This strategic roadmap aims to transform the Maldives into a developed nation by the year 2040.
Under this vision, the administration has set an ambitious target to increase the digital economy’s contribution to 15% of the national GDP by 2030. In line with these efforts, the government is currently collaborating with Google to establish submarine cable infrastructure. Furthermore, the President announced that a dedicated “Creator Hub,” equipped with modern resources for local producers, is scheduled to open in November this year. He called upon the nation’s creative talent to utilize these digital and physical platforms to showcase Maldivian craftsmanship and innovation to the global stage.
