Members of the People’s Majlis have characterized the proposed amendments to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act as a significant and revolutionary shift in the taxation framework. Comprising 25 specific amendments, the bill aims to broaden the tax base and integrate foreign entities into the system, rather than simply increasing existing tax rates. During the parliamentary debate, a majority of members expressed their support for the legislation, emphasizing that these reforms are essential to ensure that the Maldivian people and the national economy receive their fair share of the revenue generated by foreign stakeholders within the tourism industry.
