The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has completed the process of gathering all necessary information concerning the case of a newborn being taken into state care within three days of birth, against the mother’s consent. Following the public outcry over this incident, a specialized team from the Commission visited the mother’s island to conduct interviews with her and other relevant parties. Furthermore, the Commission executed a court order to access the Ministry of Family and Social Development to obtain essential documentation required for the investigation.

While the Ministry has faced significant public criticism on social media following allegations that the infant was removed due to the mother’s mental and physical vulnerabilities, the Ministry maintains that the action was a lawful measure taken to ensure the safety and welfare of the child. HRCM is currently in the process of finalizing its investigation and is preparing to release a formal report on the findings.
