Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has stated that the Maldives will be transformed into one of the world’s leading nations in expatriate management by the end of the current administration’s term. The government’s strategic objective is to identify and deport undocumented immigrants by November 17 of this year. Under the ongoing “Operation Kurangi,” biometric data has already been successfully collected from 98 percent of the expatriate population.
The Minister further highlighted that while there was previously a significant number of foreign nationals whose presence was unknown to state authorities, current initiatives aim to reduce this figure to less than 1 percent. In collaboration with local councils, the government is currently establishing a comprehensive national registry. This effort is part of a broader vision to develop a systematic management framework for expatriates, modeled after international benchmarks such as Singapore and Dubai.
