Ibrahim Falaah, the Member of Parliament for the Inguraidhoo constituency, has clarified that the proposed amendment to the Decentralization Act is not aimed at seizing citizens’ property or stripping councils of their powers. Instead, he explained that the primary objective is to ensure the uninterrupted progress of island development projects. According to Falaah, the amendment would allow such projects to proceed following deliberations by the Cabinet, in instances where a council might obstruct or withhold land required for development. Highlighting that a significant number of citizens have signed a petition in support of passing the amendment, Falaah noted that opposition parties are attempting to misinterpret the true intent of the legislation. He further emphasized that the government’s goal is to expedite development efforts in collaboration with local councils.
