The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has underscored the Maldives’ expanding influence and significant achievements within international forums that shape global fisheries policies. The Minister emphasized that intensifying the Maldives’ advocacy on the international stage is paramount to securing better market prices for local fish products and negotiating the reduction of tariffs in foreign markets.
In this context, Minister Shiyam highlighted that several key proposals submitted by the Maldives were successfully ratified during the recent Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) session held in the Maldives. He specifically pointed out that maintaining the Maldives’ Yellowfin Tuna quota without any reductions represents a major victory for the national fisheries industry. Furthermore, he noted that presiding over and playing a proactive role in such high-level deliberations serves as a solid foundation for the future trajectory of the Maldivian fisheries sector.
