The integration of the Maldives Monetary Authority’s (MMA) ‘Favara’ system with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the Maldivian financial sector. This initiative transforms international fund transfers, which previously took several days, into near-instantaneous transactions completed within seconds. This development provides much-needed relief for Maldivians residing in India for education and medical purposes, simplifying the process of receiving financial support from home.

One of the primary advantages of this system is its accessibility; users do not require any additional applications. Transactions can be seamlessly initiated through the existing mobile banking platforms of the Bank of Maldives (BML) or the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB). Furthermore, this linkage reduces transaction costs and enhances security, as the process is directly overseen by the respective central banks.

In its initial phase, the service facilitates person-to-person (P2P) transfers. The second phase is expected to introduce QR-based merchant payments, allowing for convenient transactions at businesses. This advancement is also anticipated to bolster the tourism sector. Ultimately, this project represents a pivotal step toward digitizing the Maldivian financial landscape and strengthening regional economic ties.
