The Maldives Correctional Service is finalizing preparations to inaugurate four new cell blocks within the newly developed Unit 6 at Hulhumale’ Prison this week, aiming to alleviate current overcrowding issues. Constructed on the site of the former COVID-19 facility, this unit is specifically designed to accommodate inmates engaged in technical and vocational work within the Male’ region. The facility is equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning and bunk beds, to ensure a more professional and humane environment.
The opening of these four blocks will initially provide 48 additional spaces. Upon completion of the entire project, the prison’s capacity will increase by a total of 140 beds. This expansion is expected to significantly ease the logistical challenges of housing inmates who need to be transported to the capital for court hearings or medical consultations. This initiative aligns with the government’s “One Prison Concept,” which seeks a sustainable solution to prison management challenges, with an overarching goal of increasing the national prison capacity by 500 beds during the current term.
