State Minister for Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Mohamed Muttalib, has stated that the government’s ongoing projects to increase the nation’s fish storage capacity from 9,500 metric tons to 25,000 metric tons will pave the way for securing better prices for Maldivian fishermen in the international market. The strategic expansion includes the development of cold storage facilities in Thinadhoo, Mulaku, Felivaru, Kooddoo, Fiyoari, Nilandhoo, and Funadhoo, with a target completion date set for the end of 2027.
The Minister highlighted that the increase in storage capacity will foster a more competitive market environment, enabling the sale of fish to the highest bidders. Furthermore, to enhance value addition, the government is also working on increasing the country’s fish canning production capacity.
