Marking 16 years since the inception of the Maldives’ tax system, the People’s Majlis has passed significant amendments to the Tax Administration Act to address systemic challenges. Under these reforms, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) is now empowered to estimate tax liabilities for non-filers and possesses comprehensive legal authority to seize assets and obtain information during audits and investigations.

Furthermore, the amendments establish robust frameworks for safeguarding confidential information, provide a legal basis for installment payment plans, and introduce penalties of up to MVR 250,000 for non-compliance. Additionally, MIRA has been authorized to pursue the recovery of non-tax revenues and court-imposed fines through judicial proceedings, in accordance with the directives of the Attorney General.
