Speaking at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Türkiye, the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Honorable Abdul Raheem Abdulla, urged the international community to scale up assistance for nations most vulnerable to climate change. He emphasized the vital importance of collaborative efforts to address the disproportionate impacts of the climate crisis on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), such as the Maldives.
Furthermore, the Speaker highlighted the necessity of empowering youth and women, and the pivotal role of robust democratic institutions in securing a sustainable future. Drawing attention to the ‘E-petition’ system introduced by the Majlis to enhance public engagement, he also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Middle East and advocated for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflicts.
