The Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Mohamed Nasheed, has stated that a rules-based international system and collaborative efforts with justice are essential for maintaining peace and prosperity. The Speaker made these remarks while delivering a speech at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland. Speaking under the theme “A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All,” the Speaker highlighted the importance Maldives places on international cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy.
Shedding light on the current global challenges, from the ongoing situations in Gaza and Ukraine to climate change and increasing inequality, the Speaker noted in his speech that small nations like the Maldives are often the first to feel the impacts of these issues. He emphasized the importance of a rules-based international system and collaborative efforts with justice to maintain peace and prosperity. Furthermore, he highlighted the Maldives’ Climate Emergency Act and the country’s journey towards its ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by 2030, appealing for increased international support and solidarity for vulnerable nations.
The Speaker also highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, noting that the People’s Majlis has established more than 25 parliamentary friendship groups and continues to work closely with international organizations such as the IPU and CPA. Addressing the inhumane suffering of the people of Gaza, the Speaker called for unity among the world’s parliaments and urged for immediate action.
In concluding his speech, the Speaker appealed to the world’s parliaments to remain united in advancing peace, justice, and prosperity, and to work closely with the UN to ensure that people’s voices are included in international decision-making processes.
