Being adherents of the noble Islamic faith and following a single school of thought is essential for maintaining the religious unity of Maldivians. This is an obligation upon both the government and the people to preserve the country’s independence, sovereignty, and peace. The most important factors that contribute to Maldivians remaining united are Islam, the Dhivehi language, and culture. Even historically, Maldivians have always shared a single culture and spoken one language. As a result, the unity and kindness of Maldivians are evident from every aspect.

However, in recent times, it has been noted that foreign languages and cultures have entered Maldivian society, becoming particularly trendy among the younger generation. Promoting the Dhivehi language and culture, and passing down the beautiful traditions of our ancestors from one generation to the next, is a responsibility that rests on the shoulders of every Maldivian. In the midst of global development, it may seem that unity is weakening due to the prioritization of individual financial benefits in various endeavors. Nevertheless, in every situation that the nation faces, especially during the 2004 tsunami disaster, Maldivians coming together as one family to provide assistance is the most perfect example demonstrating the unity of Maldivians.

From the earliest times to the present day, the main reason Maldivians have remained undivided as Maldivians is their language and culture.
