Prime Minister Modi plants a tree in the Five Million Trees Program

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has participated in the Five Million Trees planting program. Prime Minister Modi took part in this program during his official visit to the Maldives at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The Five Million Trees program is an initiative announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to revive disappearing plant species, increase greenery, and maintain the ecological system in the Maldives. As part of this program, Prime Minister Modi planted a mango tree in Sultan Park.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the plan to run a program to plant 5 million trees over the next 5 years at COP28, the largest conference on environmental issues. This program was officially launched in conjunction with World Environment Day. The Five Million Trees program is the largest tree planting initiative ever undertaken in the Maldives. The government has revealed that 595,000 trees have been planted so far under this program. Although it’s called the Five Million Trees program, various institutions and private parties have committed to planting 6.3 million trees. The government’s target is to plant 2 million trees by the end of this year.

While the Five Million Trees program has made significant progress, the government says this program will be different from previous tree planting initiatives. They state that while earlier tree planting programs were not sustained, President Muizzu’s government’s tree planting program will be sustainable. Furthermore, this program prioritizes planting and reviving species that are disappearing from the Maldives. As such, 90 species of plants that are becoming extinct in the Maldives have been listed and are set to be planted as part of this program.
