In commemoration of the 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially laid the foundation stone for the “Jamia al-Sultan Mohamed bin Abdullah,” which is set to become the largest mosque in the country. The foundation-laying ceremony took place in Hulhumalé Phase 2. Entrusted to the Al-Rajhi company of Saudi Arabia, this Islamic center will be situated in the area connecting Hulhumalé Phase 2 and Phase 3, with a capacity to accommodate approximately 10,000 worshippers simultaneously. Designed to reflect Islamic civilization and heritage, the complex will feature a library, a cultural center, a Quranic museum, an exhibition hall, a community hall, and various other amenities for visitors.
