The recent amendments to the Land Transport Act are set to provide modern and comprehensive solutions to the challenges faced within the sector. Under these amendments, the maximum operational lifespan for land vehicles is capped at 20 years, except under special circumstances, after which the vehicle’s registration will be cancelled. Furthermore, the law prohibits the operation of uninsured vehicles, imposing fines ranging from MVR 1,000 to MVR 3,000 for violations. To manage vehicle density, a ‘Multiple Ownership Fee’ will be introduced for individuals registering more than two vehicles under their name. Specifically targeting congestion in the Male’ region, the amendments also mandate the establishment of the Greater Male’ Transport and Mobility Office, a Traffic Management Centre, and the creation of a dedicated fund to enhance the transport system.
