Thilafushi Port to Reduce Vessel Turnaround Time to Two Days

The government’s initiative to relocate the Male’ Commercial Port to Thilafushi marks a significant turning point for the Maldivian economy. This strategic project will see the current 100-meter quay wall in Male’ replaced by a vast 1,400-meter international-standard quay in Thilafushi. Furthermore, the port’s depth will be increased from 9 meters to 14 meters, enabling larger vessels to dock with ease.

Equipped with modern cranes and advanced cargo-handling technology, the new port will drastically accelerate loading and unloading operations. This efficiency is expected to reduce the time taken to clear a vessel from the current 10-14 days down to just 2 days. Additionally, the port’s annual container handling capacity is projected to rise from 80,000 to 390,000 TEUs. Managed entirely by Maldivians, this port project is a crucial development that will ensure faster delivery of imported goods and pave the way for significant commercial expansion in the Maldives.
