Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has announced that a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the Maldives and India is expected to be signed by the end of this year. The primary objective of this agreement is to secure opportunities for Maldivian youth in India’s vast market, particularly within the IT and software development sectors. With the recent launch of UPI services between the two nations, this new agreement is anticipated to reduce trade barriers and stimulate investment growth. Furthermore, the government is actively working to list Maldivian businesses on international platforms through ‘Authentic Maldives’ to bolster the digital economy. The Maldives has already commenced the implementation of similar preferential trade agreements with China and Türkiye.
