The Mayor of GDh. Thinadhoo City, Saud Ali, has been summoned by the police for questioning regarding allegations of misrepresenting population statistics to facilitate the island’s transition to city status.
The case originated from public complaints asserting that city status was granted to Thinadhoo during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, despite the island’s population not meeting the legally mandated threshold of 10,000 residents at the time.
While the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has also conducted an investigation into this matter, Mayor Saud contends that his summons to the police is a politically motivated move intended to disrupt the scheduled activities commemorating the 60th anniversary of Thinadhoo’s resettlement. It is noted that Saud had previously served a three-month suspension following an inquiry conducted by the Local Government Authority (LGA).
