According to a recent study on the challenges facing family life in the Maldives, divorce affects one in every 27 households each year. The findings reveal that an average of eight to nine divorces are registered daily across the country. Furthermore, for every 1,000 people, there are approximately 13 marriages and 9 divorces annually. These statistics were highlighted during the launch of the “National Family Mediation” program, aimed at training court mediators. The study also sheds light on the adverse effects of divorce on women and children, while emphasizing strategies to enhance family well-being. Additionally, specialized training for mediators to resolve family disputes is scheduled to commence this coming July.
