Ibrahim Shujau, the Member of Parliament for the Baarashu constituency, has stated that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) lacks the necessary understanding of national governance and needs to learn how to administer a country effectively. Shujau alleged that the loans acquired during MDP-led administrations have failed to yield any tangible benefits for the citizens or the economy. He further contended that whenever the People’s National Congress (PNC) assumes power, it is tasked with rectifying the “mess” left behind by the MDP.

Highlighting debt repayment statistics, Shujau noted that the current administration has already settled USD 1.2 billion in its first two and a half years, which he described as a significant achievement compared to previous governments. He also revealed that, in addition to the substantial debt incurred by the most recent MDP administration, there remain significant outstanding sums from various past governments that are yet to be settled.
