Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) Secures Victory in Hithadhoo North By-Election

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, Abdulla Sodiq, has won the parliamentary by-election for the Hithadhoo North constituency.

According to the provisional results released so far, Sodiq—who is well known for his pledge to develop a railway system across Addu City—holds a clear lead. His primary opponent in this election was Ahmed Saeed, the candidate representing the People’s National Congress (PNC).

A total of seven ballot boxes were stationed for the Hithadhoo North by-election: two at Dharumavantha School in Malé and five at Hithadhoo School in Addu City. The MDP candidate successfully secured the seat following a competitive contest against the PNC candidate, Ahmed Saeed.

Abdulla Sodiq, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Hithadhoo North, served as the inaugural Mayor of Addu City, a position he held for three consecutive terms. During the previous administration, he also served as a State Minister at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure. The Hithadhoo North seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling regarding the representative elected in 2024, who was disqualified due to a proven outstanding debt.

A total of 4,121 individuals were eligible to cast their votes in this by-election.
