The United Kingdom has officially scrapped the 20 percent import duty previously levied on tuna products exported from the Maldives, effective until the end of 2028. The Maldivian government has hailed this decision as a significant milestone for the country’s sustainable fishing industry, noting that it will lower the cost of Maldivian tuna in the British market and enhance its competitiveness against other global suppliers.
This development follows a formal request made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his recent visit to the United Kingdom. The tariff removal is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to local fishermen and seafood exporting companies. To ensure the long-term sustainability of this trade preference, the Maldivian government intends to continue further diplomatic discussions with the UK to make this duty waiver permanent.
