The Republic of Maldives and Sri Lanka have fostered a profound diplomatic, cultural, and economic partnership since the formal establishment of their relations in 1965. Sri Lanka remains a pivotal partner for Maldivians, particularly in the sectors of education, healthcare, and commerce. The historical significance of this bond is underscored by the fact that the Maldives’ Declaration of Independence was signed in Colombo, reflecting the deep-rooted mutual respect and brotherhood that define the relationship between the two nations.

During the Sri Lankan President’s state visit to the Maldives, high-level discussions were held to further enhance cooperation in strategic areas, including education, fisheries, agriculture, and maritime security. Furthermore, bilateral agreements were signed to bolster cooperation within the legal and diplomatic spheres. The solidarity between the two countries was notably demonstrated by the Maldives’ significant assistance to Sri Lanka during major flooding events. Currently, Maldivians benefit from a 90-day on-arrival visa policy, and the Maldives’ national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, facilitates medical services within Sri Lanka. This long-standing alliance continues to yield substantial economic and social benefits for the citizens of both nations.
