The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has mandated the submission of annual reports by newspapers and magazines under the newly implemented registration regulations. These reports are designed to monitor the performance and activities of media outlets, while providing essential data to international donor organizations. Furthermore, the insights gained from these reports will facilitate the formulation of journalist training programs and contribute significantly to the overall professional development of the media sector.

Under the new regulatory framework, newspapers and magazines are classified into four distinct categories, with registration valid for a five-year period. The regulations also specify that the registration of any publication will be revoked if it remains inactive for a duration of twelve months. Additionally, media outlets wishing to impose any fees or charges must first obtain formal authorization from the Commission. Existing news outlets have been granted a six-month grace period to update their records in compliance with the new standards.
