Ismail Asif, recently arrested for the theft of four million Rufiyaa from an apartment in Nalahiya Residence on Majeedhee Magu, was previously granted executive clemency during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration. Asif was serving a 10-year prison sentence following a conviction for assault in 2022. However, exercising presidential legal discretion, the remaining term of his sentence was commuted to just five days, leading to his release in September last year.

The current arrest follows allegations that Asif stole four million Rufiyaa from a safe in his brother’s residence while the latter, businessman Ibrahim Ahmed (Maniku Seth), was away performing Umrah. Three additional suspects have also been apprehended in connection with the heist. According to the police, the investigation into the matter is nearing completion. Asif has a documented criminal history, with multiple prior arrests for assault and various other offenses.
