Alif Alif Ukulhas, a long-standing bastion for the MDP since the inception of political parties, saw a dramatic shift in yesterday’s local council elections as the PNC secured all seats on the island council. With this result, the incumbent Council President Shaukat Ibrahim of the MDP, who held the position for three consecutive terms since the beginning of the decentralization system, suffered a defeat against the PNC candidate, Ali Waheed.
In addition to the three council seats, the PNC also secured two seats on the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), while the MDP managed to retain only one seat on the committee. This marks a significant blow to the MDP in Ukulhas—an island traditionally considered a party stronghold and a frequent venue for its major congresses and decision-making assemblies. Commenting on the outcome, the government stated that this result demonstrates the desire of the people of Ukulhas for development and their commitment to working alongside the current administration.
