Transfer of Small Land Plots to Family Members Instead of Forfeiture to the State

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a significant policy change regarding state-provided housing. Under the new regulations, individuals who qualify for government housing will no longer be required to forfeit private land plots smaller than 600 square feet to the state. Instead, they will be permitted to transfer the ownership of such land to a family member.

This policy allows the transfer of land to spouses, children, or siblings. Furthermore, this opportunity will be extended retrospectively to those who were previously required to relinquish their land to secure flats under earlier housing schemes.

The President stated that this decision aims to ensure that families retain the benefits of their investments in land development and to minimize potential waste. He further noted that the formal guidelines detailing this new procedure will be published in the near future.
