Barcelona Withdraws from Super League, Leaving Real Madrid Isolated

Real Madrid has been left as the sole remaining member of the European Super League project after Barcelona officially withdrew from the venture, which originally consisted of twelve founding clubs.

The six English clubs were the initial group to exit the project. Within six hours of the league’s announcement, these clubs withdrew due to intense backlash from supporters and significant opposition from UEFA, the governing body of European football.

They were subsequently followed by Atletico Madrid and the two Italian giants, Inter Milan and AC Milan. Later, in 2024, Juventus also formally departed from the Super League company.

Barcelona’s primary motivation for withdrawing stems from the club’s ongoing financial challenges coupled with mounting pressure from UEFA. Following their exit, Barcelona expressed a renewed commitment to restoring and strengthening their relationship with UEFA.

This decision comes just as Barcelona is set to announce its upcoming elections tomorrow. The incumbent president, Joan Laporta, will be contesting the election as he seeks a second term. One of the most formidable challenges facing the president is the club’s financial stability—specifically, adhering to Spanish football’s financial regulations and restructuring the club’s finances to ensure long-term sustainability. Achieving these objectives necessitates a cooperative and positive relationship with both the Spanish League and UEFA.
