The Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has begun handing over 4,000 flats developed in Hulhumalé under the previous government’s Gedhoruverin (Homeowner) Scheme. Two weeks ago, on the 11th of this month, the corporation started the handover process through an online portal. Among these 4,000 flats, it was decided to first hand over the flats in Tower 14 of Amaan Udhares. Today, FDC announced that in a ceremony held at Amaan Udhares Tower 14, the Managing Director of the corporation, Hamdhaandhaan Shakeel, handed over the key to the very first flat from that tower.
During the ceremony, Shakeel also inaugurated the “Amaan Handbook.” FDC stated that this handbook would provide important information to the residents of Amaan Towers. The corporation has announced that the handover process will continue on all non-government holidays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. They also mentioned that the key handover phase and the handover date would be communicated through the FDC portal. FDC assured that when handing over the flats, essential services such as water, sewerage, and electricity would be available. The corporation said that special arrangements have been made through the portal for moving large items and furniture into the flats. They added that the opportunity to make advance bookings for this service would be available through the portal starting tomorrow.
Accordingly, after booking the designated space for storing items in the building, residents will have the opportunity to place their belongings in that area, FDC stated. The corporation explained that the main purpose of carrying out the population phase of the towers in this manner is to minimize congestion in the common areas of the tower as families move in, ensuring a smooth and organized process. FDC has been making agreements for 4,000 flats and collecting a deposit of MVR 25,000. The corporation stated that the flats would be handed over upon payment of this amount. The Gedhoruverin Scheme was introduced by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to address the housing shortage in the Malé area. The first list of flat recipients under this scheme was released in the final days of that government.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) halted the flat distribution, citing issues with the list. After coming to power, the current government reviewed the matter and released a new list after more than a year. Following criticism of this new list, the Housing Ministry announced that flats would be allocated based on the previous list. Concerns have also risen regarding the current government’s flat distribution process. An issue emerged where 315 people who scored 75 points were selected through a lottery for flat allocation, while 301 people who scored more than 76 points were not included in the lottery. Additionally, the Fahi Union, which advocates for the rights of Gedhoruverin flat recipients, has alleged that about 350 flats are being attempted to be sold by individuals claiming to be Housing Ministry employees, contacting various people. However, the Housing Ministry has denied these allegations.
