President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that he will establish a branch of the Quran Center in every inhabited island. The President said this while speaking at a meeting with the people of Veymandoo in Thaa Atoll during his current tour of the islands in the atoll. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the current government places special emphasis on promoting Islamic values and ensuring that religious matters are safely passed on to future generations. The President said that Maldivians have remained a united and harmonious people for so long because of Islam. Noting that our forefathers and heroes have passed down Islam to us today through their jihad, the President said it is crucial to pass on this religion to future generations. He stated that it is necessary to nurture righteous advisors for this purpose and that if religious principles are not upheld in Maldivian society, any infrastructural development brought to the country would be meaningless.

“If we let children drown in the winds and currents of the world, development has no purpose. We must resolve to support religion and pass it on to future generations in a positive way. Supporting religion is a very important policy of ours,” said the President. In his speech, the President shared some of the initiatives the government has decided to undertake to promote Islam. As such, the President said that during this term, a branch of the Quran Center will be established in every inhabited island. “We will establish facilities based on the population of each island. We are aware that there are islands with small populations,” the President said.

The President said that special importance is also given to establishing Waqf buildings in different parts of the country. He said that the first Waqf buildings will be constructed in the cities. In addition, the President said that a special project will be launched to install Dhikr boards in all inhabited islands. As such, the President said that boards containing Islamic slogans and words of advice will be installed on streets and in public gathering areas.

In his speech, the President also highlighted some achievements in promoting religion. Noting that a large number of Hafiz (memorizers of the Quran) have been trained in a short period of time, the President said that while 24 Hafiz were trained this year, 50 Hafiz will be trained next year. He also said that while 500 young Khateebs (sermon givers) have been trained so far, by the end of next year, 1000 young Khateebs will be active in the Maldives.
