The United Nations General Assembly has decided to support a resolution recognizing a Palestinian state, with votes from Western powers. 142 UN member countries voted in favor of the resolution. Among these countries are Western powers including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany. 10 countries voted against it, including Israel and the United States. Additionally, 12 countries abstained from voting.

France and Saudi Arabia have submitted a resolution to the UN General Assembly titled “Resolution on Peaceful Resolution of the Palestinian Issue and Implementation of the Two-State Solution.” The resolution primarily proposes establishing an independent Palestinian state without the involvement of Hamas, which governs Gaza. The resolution suggests that Hamas relinquish power, lay down arms, and allow the Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs the West Bank, to take control in Gaza.

The Arab League had previously endorsed this resolution, and 17 UN member countries signed it in July. This resolution was passed before the UN General Assembly meeting scheduled for September 22 in New York, USA. French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will officially recognize Palestine as an independent state at this meeting. Additionally, Malta, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Belgium have also decided to recognize Palestine as an independent state
