Following protests by Nepalese citizens over the ban on certain social media platforms in Nepal, which resulted in 19 deaths, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned from his position one day later. The government of Nepal had later revoked the decision to ban certain social media platforms as protests intensified. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. While 19 people have died in the unrest, over 100 people have been injured.
To control the chaos in the country, the Nepalese government had also declared a curfew. However, as protesters continued to gather despite the curfew, Prime Minister Oli was forced to resign. In his resignation letter sent to President Ramchandra Paudel, Oli stated that he had decided to resign from his position considering the country’s situation. He also expressed hope that his resignation would help resolve the crisis facing the country and that a political solution could be found in accordance with the constitution.
An aide to President Paudel has confirmed that the President has accepted Prime Minister Oli’s resignation.
