Former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof said last night that those who need to know why he had to leave the opposition MDP will understand, and that he doesn’t want to complain about it. After staying away from MDP activities, Mahloof has now left the party. Some MDP members and members of the public have been criticizing this decision. Mahloof said in a Facebook post that leaving MDP was a difficult decision. However, he said that some people in the party would know why he had to do it. Although he didn’t give details, Mahloof distanced himself from MDP activities after he last announced that he would contest in the Male’ mayoral election on the MDP ticket. However, he later withdrew and stepped back.
Mahloof said that if any MDP member is unhappy with his decision to leave the party, he apologizes for it and hopes that there will always be friendship. “It’s been 2 years since I’ve been on a political podium, on TV, or actively involved in political work. I thank all those who welcomed today’s decision. I apologize to those who couldn’t accept the decision,” Mahloof’s post said. “But most of the criticism seems to be coming from those who worked hardest to change the MDP government. Those who were good yesterday have become bad today. There isn’t a single party that has consistently maintained certain policies. There isn’t a leader who has remained unwavering in a single mindset.”
Mahloof said he was happy to have done a lot of work in the cabinet as a participant in the development that former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih brought to the Maldives. He joined MDP after disagreeing with PPM during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration and distancing himself from that party. At that time, he was a parliament member on the PPM ticket. Mahloof, who started his political work from former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s DRP, has not yet revealed anything about his political future. He is currently mostly working on sports-related matters.”
