26 countries have stated that they will provide security guarantees to ensure Ukraine’s safety after the end of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. On September 5th, 35 countries supporting Ukraine held a meeting in Paris, France. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss ways to ensure Ukraine’s security after the war, make related decisions, and seek assistance from US President Donald Trump. As such, it was decided at the meeting to send troops from various countries to Ukraine and establish an international military force in the country. Under this decision, land, sea, and air forces will be stationed in Ukraine. The purpose of establishing such a military force is to prevent Russia from attacking Ukraine again and to reduce Ukraine’s vulnerability.
While the Russia-Ukraine war is not expected to end in the near future, countries supporting Ukraine say they want to be prepared in advance for the day the war ends. Speaking to journalists, French President Emmanuel Macron said that on the day the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been ongoing since 2022, ends, the decisions made to ensure Ukraine’s security will be implemented immediately.
France and the United Kingdom have said they will send troops to join the force sent to Ukraine. Macron did not reveal which other countries would send troops. Some countries have proposed to provide assistance through other indirect means instead of sending troops. This includes training Ukrainian soldiers. Both Germany and Italy said that their troop deployment depends on conditions including the extent of US involvement in the project. After the meeting, Macron, along with other Western leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, called Trump to discuss providing security to Ukraine. Macron said that the US assistance in ensuring Ukraine’s security will be decided in the coming days.
When contacted, Trump said that Western countries should stop buying oil from Russia, stating that buying Russian oil is financial assistance to the war against Ukraine. Additionally, Trump said that economic measures should be taken against China due to its support for Russia. Macron said that Western countries and the US have agreed to further cooperate in these areas.
