Pakistan has experienced unusually heavy rainfall, causing widespread flooding in many areas, leading to the relocation of over a million people to safer regions. The eastern Punjab province has been the most severely affected. This is the worst flooding disaster the country has faced in about four decades.

In addition to Pakistan, a large part of India is also facing monsoon rains. The flooding in Punjab is due to continuous heavy rainfall and the release of excess water from dams in India. As a result, three rivers flowing from India to Pakistan’s eastern regions have overflowed their banks, flooding villages along their shores.

The Disaster Management Authority of Punjab Province stated that over 1,400 villages have been submerged, with people’s homes and farmlands underwater. More than a million people from these villages have been relocated to safer areas. The flooding has also caused extensive damage to hundreds of farmlands, resulting in significant economic losses for farmers in the region.

Qadir Abad is one of the villages flooded by the overflowing Chenab River. Residents report that their homes are currently underwater. With no shelter, women and children have no place to sleep, and children are suffering severe psychological trauma, according to the villagers.

Half of Pakistan’s population lives in Punjab and its surrounding areas. It’s a region known for extensive wheat and rice farming. The three main rivers flowing through the province – Chenab, Sutlej, and Ravi – are crucial for the area’s agricultural industry. However, with these rivers overflowing, wheat, rice, and cotton fields have suffered extensive damage.

The monsoon rains have also caused flooding in many parts of India. The Indian-controlled Kashmir region has been the most affected in India. In August alone, various flood-related incidents in Kashmir have claimed 60 lives. Since June, the death toll from the monsoon in Pakistan has risen to 819. Pakistani authorities have reported 12 deaths related to the current rainfall in Punjab.
