A poll has shown that a large number of American citizens now believe that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, Palestine.
The poll, conducted by Quinnipiac University, involved 1,220 Americans. More than half of the American citizens who participated in the poll believe that Israel is working to exterminate the Palestinian people. Among those who believe this, 77% are Democrats, and 51% are not affiliated with any particular political ideology.
However, many of the Republican participants in the poll do not consider Israel’s actions as an act of genocide. This is the view of 64% of Republicans. Nevertheless, 20% of those who support this ideology believe that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
Six out of every ten voters are dissatisfied with America providing weapons to Israel. This is the highest number of people expressing dissatisfaction with America selling weapons to Israel since Quinnipiac University began monitoring public opinion on this issue in November 2023.
The number of voters sympathizing with Palestinians is roughly equal to those sympathizing with Israelis. 37% of voters are more sympathetic to Palestinians, while 36% are more sympathetic to Israelis. This is the first time since Quinnipiac began polling on this issue in December 2001 that sympathy for Palestinians has been this high among American citizens. It’s also the time when support for Israel has been the lowest.
Tim Malloy, an analyst at Quinnipiac University who studies these polls, said that support for Palestine is increasing day by day, and the number of people dissatisfied with providing weapons to Israel is also growing. He also noted that the language used by the public to describe Israel’s genocide in Gaza is becoming harsher.
Since Israel began its aggressive attacks on Gaza on October 7, 2023, 62,966 people have been martyred, including 18,430 children. Israel is now using food as a weapon of war, starving the people of Gaza. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have been accusing Israel of committing genocide against the people of Gaza.
In January of last year, the International Court of Justice decided that the case filed by South Africa accusing Israel of committing genocide and exterminating the people of Gaza could proceed. It also ruled that the Palestinian people have the right to be protected from genocide. In November of the same year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on suspicion of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity.
