The Managing Director of STELCO, Hussain Fahmy, has stated that they are working with the government to establish a large power plant in Male’.

In an interview given to state media, Fahmy said that Male’ is unlike other capital cities in the world as it has a common grid. He mentioned that Male’ only has the STELCO grid, and that’s where the power is generated.

Fahmy said that there is no situation in Male’ where one can live without electricity, and that water and all basic services depend on electricity.

“We always work to reduce downtime and plan ways to prevent power outages. However, everything comes down to money. Even now, we are working with the government to try to build a large power plant in Male’,” Fahmy said.

Fahmy said that this year and last year, they increased 17 megawatts at peak, but noted that this is not a sustainable model. He also pointed out that bringing and operating high-speed engines is not a sustainable model.

“Even now, we are working to try to build a new 100-megawatt power plant. However, you know the economic situation when this government came to power. The country was in debt economically. A power plant needs 100 or 200 million dollars. Financial institutions also look at securing that, right? So the state of the country, our situation, and the situation of this government is a reality that needs to be discussed further,” Fahmy said.

Fahmy also stated that STELCO’s goal is to overcome challenges and move forward.
