President Donald Trump has decided to send 800 National Guard troops to Washington D.C. and place the city’s police department directly under his supervision. Trump stated that this decision was made due to the increase in crime and numerous illegal activities occurring in Washington. He said this was a necessary step to save Washington. Trump also mentioned that violent gangs and criminals are ruling in Washington.
Statistics show that the rate of violent crimes in Washington increased in 2023. However, since then, the crime rate in Washington has been rapidly declining. Trump said that in recent days, hundreds of officers and agents from various federal agencies have been sent to Washington. Trump further stated that the Washington Police Department will be headed by Attorney General Pam Bondi. This is the second time in recent history that Trump has made such a decision. Last June, Trump sent National Guard troops to Los Angeles without the green light from California Governor Gavin Newsom. The legality of that decision is currently being litigated.
Trump, who began his second term in January of this year, has been making unusual and different decisions during his current term, unlike how other presidents have governed. Trump has hinted at sending the National Guard to more cities in the future. He has stated that the situation in Chicago has worsened and that the National Guard needs to be sent there as well.
