Istvan Urbanyi, the head coach of the Maldives National Under-20 football team, has stated that the squad has made significant strides in both physical fitness and overall performance as they prepare for the upcoming SAFF Championship. He noted that the process of building this team, selected from a pool of over 160 players, is moving in the right direction and emphasized that the players are highly motivated for the tournament.
However, Urbanyi highlighted that the lack of competitive match experience throughout the year remains a challenge. He remarked that the team’s true potential and level will become clearer after the first two matches of the competition. The Maldives is set to face Sri Lanka in their opening match next Monday.
