Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has stated that the elimination of the 20% tariff on Maldivian fish exports to the United Kingdom has catalyzed a more competitive domestic market. This policy shift has resulted in both private enterprises and the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) increasing their purchase prices from local fishermen. The Minister further noted that the primary constraint in securing premium prices for fish products remains the country’s limited capacity for processing and cold storage. While the current tariff exemption is scheduled to remain in effect until the end of 2028, the government is actively engaged in diplomatic negotiations to secure a permanent arrangement.
