Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan has stated that resort chains, construction companies, and certain political figures are involved in operating the illegal black market for dollars, asserting that action will be taken against those involved. Highlighting that unlicensed establishments have traded 76 million dollars over the past nine months, the Minister noted that such activities constitute criminal offenses that facilitate money laundering. Furthermore, the Minister emphasized that the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) holds the legal power to penalize unauthorized currency exchange operations with fines ranging from MVR 5,000 to MVR 1 million.
