The People’s Majlis has today passed an amendment to reduce the import duty on cigarettes, beedis, and heated tobacco products from MVR 8 to MVR 4. This bill, which received unanimous support from 68 members, also mandates a total exemption of duty on smoking cessation aids, including nicotine patches and nicotine gum.
According to the government, these legislative changes align with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations and support the ongoing national campaign to curb tobacco consumption. While acknowledging that this amendment will result in a decrease in state revenue, the government emphasized that the measure is a strategic step toward protecting public health from the hazards of tobacco use. The new regulations will come into effect once the President ratifies the bill.
