President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has today officially inaugurated the new building of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Villimale, developed with the generous assistance of the Government of Japan. This centre serves as the primary hub for coordinating search and rescue operations within the Maldives’ maritime and aerial territories, dedicated to safeguarding lives and property.
The newly developed facility is equipped with state-of-the-art resources, including a modern operations room, specialized training classrooms, and an auditorium. This project was also supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Government of Australia. Since its inception in 2006, the MRCC has played a pivotal role in over 3,700 incidents, assisting in the rescue of more than 8,000 lives over the past decade. The establishment of this new building is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Coast Guard and further strengthen efforts to ensure the safety and security of the public.
