Maldives Successfully Hosts its First-Ever IOTC Annual Meeting

The 30th Annual Meeting of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) has successfully concluded in the Maldives. Held at Barceló Nasandhura, the sessions brought together over 225 delegates representing 29 member nations and various international organizations.

During this high-level meeting, a total of seven resolutions were adopted, including three significant proposals submitted by the Maldives. These key resolutions focus on the conservation of mobulid rays, the enhancement of fisheries data collection, and matters related to the BBNJ Treaty (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction). Additionally, the Maldives played a pivotal role in discussions regarding catch limits for yellowfin tuna and billfish species.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture noted that hosting this prestigious international meeting underscores the government’s steadfast commitment to promoting sustainable fishing practices on a global stage.
