To sustain and propel the growth of the Maldivian tourism industry, a high-level delegation—comprising representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Visit Maldives (MMPRC), Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Maldivian (Island Aviation), and key tourism industry associations—is scheduled to conduct an official visit to China from July 1 to 11, 2026. The delegation, led by the Minister of State for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Honorable Haris Mohamed, will visit the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. Representing Visit Maldives, the CEO and MD, Honorable Ibrahim Shiuree, will also play a key leadership role in this mission.

This visit marks a significant strategic effort to bolster Maldivian tourism at a time when global travel routes and tourist behaviors are being influenced by evolving geopolitical shifts in the Middle East. Consequently, the Ministry is actively intensifying its engagement with primary source markets and high-potential regions to ensure continued industry growth and to enhance market confidence.

China currently stands as the top source market for tourists to the Maldives. By the end of June 2026, the country recorded over 168,677 Chinese arrivals, reflecting a substantial 19.8% increase compared to the previous year. This official visit is part of the government’s broader policy to strengthen ties with key industry stakeholders and achieve the national targets set for this year. During the mission, high-level meetings are scheduled with senior Chinese government officials, major airlines, tour operators, travel agencies, and travel technology companies.

Furthermore, networking events will be hosted in each city to showcase the diverse range of tourism products the Maldives offers. The primary objective of these activities is to increase air connectivity, expand market reach, and facilitate a higher influx of tourists to the Maldives. Despite global challenges, the Ministry and Visit Maldives remain committed to providing a safe and premium experience for travelers. Such targeted promotional activities in key markets will continue consistently in the coming months.
