To curb the influx of narcotics and illicit goods, the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has announced that a container scanner will be installed and operationalized at the Maldives’ primary seaport within the next four months. This collaborative initiative between Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and Maldives Customs Service aims to bolster border security and significantly mitigate the smuggling of counterfeit products and illegal drugs.
While the government has already enhanced its intelligence-led inspection protocols and commenced the scanning of all air cargo, the Minister further highlighted that integrating relevant agencies under a unified framework has yielded substantial progress. This strategic approach has resulted in the successful seizure of significant quantities of narcotics in recent operations.
