Statistics from the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) reveal that the state collected MVR 1.3 billion (USD 88 million) in Green Tax during the first seven months of this year, marking a 5.8% increase compared to the same period last year. Introduced in 2016 to fund environmental protection initiatives, this tax is levied on tourists at rates ranging from USD 6 to USD 12 per person per night, depending on the type of accommodation. The revenue generated from this tax is primarily utilized by the government for environmental projects, such as establishing water and sewerage systems and implementing coastal protection measures across the islands.
