“Elimination of Tariffs Set to Double Fish Exports”

Following the United Kingdom’s decision to suspend tariffs on Maldivian fish products for a two-year period, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef has highlighted the significant potential to double the volume of fish exports to the UK. While the Maldives currently exports approximately $25 million worth of fish annually to the UK, the government anticipates this figure to rise to $50 million under the new trade concessions.

Given that Maldivian fish is sustainably sourced and highly regarded in international markets, this policy shift is expected to incentivise more private enterprises to enter the export industry. The government is actively working to secure a permanent arrangement for this tariff relief, which is currently scheduled to remain in effect until the end of 2028.
