Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is a resilient leader who emerged onto the political stage through student Islamic movements and reformist activism. Although he joined the government under Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership—serving as Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister—ideological differences arising from the 1997 financial crisis led to his dismissal. Subsequently, he spent numerous years in prison facing politically motivated charges. Despite his incarceration, he remained undeterred, founding the “Reformasi” movement and steadfastly leading the opposition.
In 2018, he formed a strategic alliance with his former political rival, Mahathir Mohamad, to defeat Najib Razak’s administration. Following this victory, Anwar received a royal pardon, facilitating his formal return to politics. After decades of challenges and anticipation, he triumphed in the 2022 general elections, assuming office as Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister. His family also maintains a significant political presence, notably through his wife, Dr. Wan Azizah, and his daughter, Nurul Izzah. Today, Anwar is dedicated to national reform and progress, leading a coalition government under his “Malaysia Madani” vision.
